MSU College of Law

Leadership Essentials for Professionals

This interactive workshop will provide a small group of law and business students the opportunity to further develop critical personal and professional effectiveness skills. Students will participate in exercises that help them improve their ability to set goals, prioritize projects and goals, manage time, listen, communicate effectively, and manage conflict.

This pilot program of the Law College Career Services Office will be co-taught by:

  • Daniel W. Linna Jr, MSU College of Law Assistant Dean for Career Development and Professor of Law in Residence
  • Jim Manley, Eli Broad College of Business Associate Director, Student Engagement and Outreach at the Demmer Center for Business Transformation

Manley conducted similar training for managers when he was an executive in the automotive industry.

Before the workshop: Each student will be given a copy of Stephen R. Covey’s The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: Powerful Lessons in Personal Change. This best-selling business book has been used to teach leadership within countless organizations, including Fortune 500 companies, nonprofits, and business and law schools. Each student must read this book in its entirety before the first workshop session.

  • Friday, February 13, 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. (dinner provided)
Between the two sessions, students will be required to complete exercises in a workbook, which will be issued on the first day. The exercises should take no longer than two or three hours.
  • Sunday, February 15, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (lunch provided)
Both sessions will be held in the Castle Board Room, Law College Building.

Space is limited. If you are interested in attending, send a statement of interest with your updated resume attached via email to Dan Linna at linnadan@law.msu.edu
