Summer Financial Aid Information

In order to receive summer aid you must have a valid 2017-2018 FAFSA on file with the Office of Financial Aid. The application deadline for the 2017-2018 FAFSA is June 30, 2018 but you should file as soon as possible. You do not need to update the FAFSA to indicate your interest in summer aid. In addition, if you indicated on your FAFSA that you would like to receive summer aid, then you must still submit a request through STU-INFO as instructed below.

You must be half-time to receive an Unsubsidized Loan and/or GradPLUS for summer. However, some private loans may be processed for less than half-time enrollment. *Please note that summer Unsubsidized Loans can impact your eligibility for Unsubsidized Loans for fall.*

Summer aid is not awarded automatically. You must request summer aid by logging into STU-INFO and clicking on "Apply for Summer Aid" on the Overview page under "Financial Aid (Check Your Aid)".

We encourage students to sign up for direct deposit, especially students who will be studying abroad for summer. You can obtain the form from the Office of Accounting in room 306.

Summer budgets are listed below. All budgets will be adjusted for students enrolled in fewer than four credits who are receiving a private loan. Summer tuition for MSU Law courses including externships for all J.D. students is $1,475 per credit hour with exceptions noted below.  Also note that students enrolled in shortened courses (like LAW 587E) will have their budget and aid reduced accordingly unless they are also enrolled in courses that cover the entire summer session.

Current 2Ls will have their scholarships applied outright for Summer 2018 and funds will be applied to College of Law credits only, including reduced-tuition study abroad courses and externships*. Students who also want loan for the summer must follow the regular application process above.

You may contact the Office of Financial Aid at if you have questions.

Please note: students who receive a federal loan disbursement and drop below three credits before the end of the 100% refund period will have all federal loan funds returned resulting in a bill.

Financial Aid for MSU College of Law study abroad programs will function similarly to regular on-campus courses. MSU College of Law will process your financial aid and disburse it to your student account. You can find information about MSU Study abroad programs here.

**Please note that all airfare costs for study abroad programs are based on projected costs for flights from Detroit. However financial aid for airfare is not available until summer. You may be able to request a cash advance from Accounting by contacting them at **

Costs can be dramatically affected by individual budgetary habits and the fluctuations of currency exchange rates against the dollar. All students should approach the prospect of living abroad with maturity and a sense of financial responsibility.  MSU College of Law students who enroll in our study abroad programs in Summer of 2017 will pay the lesser of 50% of the per credit rate of $1100 or the amount determined by application of their scholarship.

Summer Work-Study

Work-Study is available to students during summer but funds are limited. However, students must be enrolled and attending classes (or working at an externship) half-time during the entire period of employment. If the student is not enrolled half-time while earning Work-Study, or is not enrolled at all for summer but wishes to receive Work-Study, then any Work-Study income during this period will be counted against his or her federal aid eligibility in the following fall 2018 semester. If you are graduating in the summer of 2018 then you must be enrolled half-time during the entire period of employment as stipulated above.

Summer Study Abroad or Visit Out (non-MSU College of Law programs)

If you wish to receive summer financial aid for a study abroad program or courses at another school you must first complete a Visiting Student Permission Form (VSPF), which is available in the Registrar's Office. If your courses from the "host" school are approved for transfer to MSU College of Law (the "home" school) then a copy of your VSPF will be forwarded to the Office of Financial Aid. The Office of Financial Aid will then complete and email a consortium agreement to the host school asking them to detail costs for your program and courses. Once the consortium agreement is returned to the Office of Financial Aid, we will compile a specific budget for your program and make a financial aid offer. You must then follow all necessary steps (for example, logging into "Check Your Aid", accepting your Unsubsidized Loans, pursuing a private/GradPLUS loan) in order to secure your summer aid.

MSU College of Law will process your financial aid; you need do nothing for financial aid with the host school.

Refunds will be issued by MSU College of Law generally on the first day of regular summer courses (5/14/18).

Please note: The Office of Financial Aid will issue a check directly to your host school for any expenses you owe to them. If you need a cash advance then you should see the Office of Accounting, Room 306 or submit a request online through the Student Services web page at

Summer Aid and Externships

Students enrolled for an externship will be offered the summer externship budget. However, the budget can be increased after the drop/add period. We will need the dates of employment before a budget increase can be processed.
