MSU Law’s Diversity and Equity Services (DESO) is excited to announce Diversity Month 2024! Sponsored by MSU Law DESO’s Diversity Month Committee and Multicultural Executive Council, we invite you to join us for change-agent presentations, cultural awareness events, community dialogue and complimentary diverse foods. This year’s diversity month amplifies the significance of multiculturalism, equity, diversity, inclusion and access in the advancement of legal justice.

Join MSU Law DESO’s Diversity Month 2024 Committee and Multicultural Executive Council as we participate with MSU Law Citing Slavery Project team and Director of the project, Professor Justin Simard learn more about how law was critical to the establishment and growth of American slavery. Judges authored thousands of appellate opinions on the subject, yet the influence of these cases remains underappreciated. This presentation by the Citing Slavery Project team will explore how the law of slavery was constructed, why modern American judges and lawyers continue to rely on slave cases and principles derived from them, and how legal research tools and methods have led to this reliance on the law of slavery.

Equipping Spartans in Field Placements | In-Person |
Join MSU Law DESO’s Diversity Month 2024 Committee and Multicultural Executive Council as we participate in a MSU Prevention, Education and Outreach Office student-center workshop. When Spartans are off-campus for work, internships or research opportunities, they still have rights and resources related to the university. The “Equipping Spartans for Field Placements” workshop will highlight university policies and resources related to sex-based discrimination and/or harassment behaviors that may impact Spartans off-campus. The workshop also includes discussions on navigating boundary setting in professional spaces, as well as strategies for intervention in problematic situations.

Join MSU Law DESO’s Diversity Month 2024 Committee and Multicultural Executive Council as we participate in MSU Law Criminal Defense Association’s film watch of the award-winning Judging Juries. To date, juries hold a key role in the criminal justice system. Specifically, there is an expectation that juries are a “fair cross-section” of the community. However, there are issues that lead to a lack of diversity in a jury pool. At the conclusion of this film watch, Abby Ginzberg, filmmaker, will join us via Zoom for a discussion to further understand why juries lack diversity.

Join MSU Law DESO’s Diversity Month 2024 Committee and Multicultural Executive Council as we participate in our Diversity Month 2024 final event with MSU Law Student Bar Association – DEI Committee for an informative virtual panel discussion that will feature individuals who illuminate and actualize the importance of diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace. This virtual panel will consist of MSU Law alumni Angela Baldwin, a Partner at The Miller Law Firm, and Alison Nelson, former Director of DEI Strategies & Inclusion for Ford Motor Co. They will be accompanied by Kelly Weeks, a Rhodes College professor who has done extensive research on DEI in the workplace.
