Professor CandeubMSU College of Law Professor Adam Candeub’s article examining the Social Media Regulation Act , a recent law on social media enacted by the state of Utah, was a featured commentary on the Federalist Society website. Entitled Age Verification for Social Media: A Constitutional and Reasonable Regulation, Professor Candeub defends the Utah law’s constitutionality. Since the passage of the Utah law, four other states: Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Virginia have passed similar legislation.

The new Utah law responds to the question of who has the power to raise children: social media platforms or parents? The law was based on recommendations in “Protecting Teens from Big Tech,” a report co-authored by Professor Candeub with Psychologist and Professor Jean Twenge at San Diego State University, Future of Freedom Fellow at the Institute for Family Studies, and Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia Brad Wilcox, as well as Senior Policy Analyst, Ethics and Public Policy Center, Clare Morrell.

Professor Candeub serves as Director of the Intellectual Property, Information, and Communications Law Program at the College of Law which he joined in the fall 2004. Prior to joining MSU, he served as an advisor at the Federal Communications Commission. His scholarly interests focus on the law and regulation of communications, internet, and technology. His writings are often featured in popular outlets such as the Wall Street Journal and U.S. News & World Report. His work has been cited and relied on in Federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.

In 2019, he was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Telecommunications and Information during the Trump Administration. Later, he assumed the role of Acting Assistant Secretary. He also served as Deputy Associate Attorney General for the Department of Justice.
