First Monday in October is the start date for the U.S. Supreme Court annual session, a tradition dating back to 1917. Taking a look ahead to the cases likely to come before the Supreme Court in the 2023-2024 session was a panel of MSU College of Law professors. Moderated by Professor Kevin Douglas, the panel featured the diverse perspectives of Professors Daniel Barnhizer, Adam Candeub, Nancy Costello, Noga Morag-Levine, and Glen Staszewski.

“It was a great event and turnout,” Professor Douglas said. “We had 60-90 students participate and five professors from different philosophical and theoretical backgrounds presenting great information to the students, so we all benefited from today.” Some of the potential cases discussed that may be considered by the Supreme Court included gun laws, trademark law, and cases surrounding use of social media.

Presented by the MSU Law Faculty Programs Committee, these Hot Topics in Law Series panel discussions and other events aimed to educate students outside of the classroom. “We’re currently working on a couple of events for second semester,” Professor Douglas said. “Subject areas include environmental policy and climate change, so we definitely have some interesting opportunities coming in the future.”
