MSU Coaches Offer Congratulations, Advice as New Law Students Start Journey

Incoming College of Law students were surprised during lunch on Day One of Foundations Week with inspirational welcomes from two MSU Coaches. They were also treated to the antics of beloved mascot Sparty and the MSU Fight Song performed by the members of the Spartan Marching Band. It has become something of an annual event that the incoming class of law students gets a pep talk from MSU athletic coaches.

MSU football Coach Mel Tucker offered a video welcome and congratulations. Coach Fralick, hired in April, came in person to address three different classrooms of first year students who are spending the week learning what to expect from law school.

Michigan State University women’s basketball Coach Robyn Fralick opened by telling students that she called her sister-in-law, a lawyer, in anticipation of talking to the MSU College of Law Class of ‘26 during the beginning of Foundations Week Tuesday. “I asked her what law school was like,” Coach Fralick said, smiling at the new students. “Wow, good luck.”

“I’ve spoken at a lot of events and basketball camps,” Fralick said. “But to be quite honest, I was nervous coming here today. I’m inspired by you. I’m honored to be here.” Coach Fralick told students that they were in for more than a few peaks and valleys during their journey and shared the five core values she teaches her basketball players: Be a great teammate, manners matter, trust; toughness, and commitment. “To be where you’re sitting today, you’ve already got commitment,” she said, but she also issued a cautionary note as the new class moves forward.

“What got you here won’t get you there,” she said. “Law school is tough and we need you. You guys are game changers. You can offer real change in the world but none of us does it alone.”

And after offering congratulations and advice, Coach Fralick offered an invitation. “You’re going to be reading, and reading a lot,” she said. “Through the hard work, find time to have fun.” Then she paused. “The first women’s home basketball game is November. 9,” she said to applause.
