MSU Law Library Director Authors Column in Michigan Bar Journal

MSU Law’s John F. Schaefer Law Library Director Jane Meland was a featured columnist in the November issue of the Michigan Bar Journal. Contributing to the “Libraries and Legal Research” column, Ms. Meland’s column focused on ways to stay updated on federal and state tax guidance.

In “Keeping up with Tax Guidance: Newsletters and Alerts,” Ms. Meland referenced “one of the challenges associated with tax guidance is keeping abreast of the constantly changing collection of guidance documents issued at the state and federal levels.” She suggested newsletters and alerts as one of the most useful tools for monitoring updates.

The column shared free newsletters and alerts available on government websites. Ms. Meland highlighted the complimentary newsletters provided free by the Internal Revenue Service and the Michigan Department of Treasury. She also discussed research services like Bloomberg Law and Lexis Tax that give tax practitioners highly adaptable alerts for a fee.

Ms. Meland has been Director of the Law Library since 2020 and a Librarian since 1997. She earned both a law degree and a master’s in library and information sciences and is a member of the State Bar of Michigan. Michigan Bar Journal is a publication of the State Bar of Michigan.
