Recognized as a strong advocate for its clients with free tax-related legal services, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) awarded the Tax Clinic with a three-year grant, 2024-2026. For 2024, the Clinic was awarded over $140,000, exceeding the maximum of $100,000 prior to 2023.

The grant is awarded through the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) Program. The U.S. Congress increased funding for the grant program in 2024. In awarding the Tax Clinic additional funding, the LITC Program office cited the long history of the MSU Law program and the stellar services that the Clinic provides to the public. The Tax Clinic has participated in the LITC program for over 20 years.

Clients of the Tax Clinic receive support for controversies with the IRS and the Michigan Department of the Treasury. Assistance includes tax collection problems, liens and levies, innocent spouse claims, audits, collection due process hearings, appeals conferences, and advocacy before state and federal courts. Non-native-English speaking clients are also offered educational outreach related to tax matters.
