Exploring the Intellectual Property (IP) legal environment and the critical role it plays in advancing innovation was a topic of the first IP Speaker Series. Giving MSU law students a glimpse into IP and patent law was MSU Law Adjunct Professor and Senior Attorney at Foster Swift, Mike Murshak.

Host of the IP Speaker Series is MSU Law Professor Adam Candeub, who has the dual role of Director of the Intellectual Property, Information, and Communications Law program. “This speaker series presents law students with a more in-depth view from practicing IP and patent attorneys. IP is a critical field of law as it is responsible for bringing new ideas, products, technology, etc., to the American public.”

Professor Murshak sat down with law students in a roundtable setting to share his extensive experience and reminisce about his law school days and what he encountered early in his career. Professor Murshak also talked about the important work that IP attorneys performed and provided tips for students considering a similar path.

A licensed patent and IP attorney, he specializes in patent, trademark strategy and acquisition, and general IP and business counseling including preparation, prosecution, and licensing. He says that as much as he loves practicing law, opportunities to meet with students is also incredibly rewarding. “I love it, I feel like I can talk for hours and give back to students,” he said. “I have a wealth of knowledge and I want to give this information to students so that they are prepared to make the right decisions.”

Professor Candeub recognizes the importance of giving students exposure to experts like Professor Murshak. He hosts these events to tap into professionals associated with the law college who can come and educate students outside of the classroom for more in depth conversations. “It’s great to have adjuncts and alumnus return and talk informally with students. The students really value this information and it’s essential for their education.”

While a graduate of University of Connecticut School of Law, Professor Murshak received his Bachelor of Science from MSU in Chemical Engineering and grew up in Ingham County. He has been an adjunct professor for four years at MSU, and says he enjoys the time spent in the classroom and it has become a passion of his away from practicing law. “I bleed green and it’s nice to be back on campus. I’m glad they have the resources here at MSU Law with a lot of intelligent professors who prepare students for future law careers. To me, being a professor is a gift; teaching is a passion and I feel my style connects with the students.”
