MSU Law Professor’s Citing Slavery Project Generates New Media Attention

The Citing Slavery Project has generated a lot of interest in the legal community and coverage in media outlets across the country since the initiative began. This initiative was started by MSU College of Law Associate Professor Justin Simard in 2020 after encountering repeated use of slave cases as precedent in current legal proceedings.

Since then, Professor Simard and dozens of MSU Law students have collected over 10,000 cases and catalogued them into an online database accessible by the public. Professor Simard and his team of passionate law students are encouraged by the amount of attention this project has received and are hopeful that it will stimulate more dialogue and motivate change in the legal system.

Most recently, Professor Simard and the Project were featured on the Louisiana Reconsidered Podcast. Louisiana is a key state for the Citing Slavery Project team’s research. The State News profiled the Project in the October 2 edition.
