Rain Doesn't Dampen Law Student Organization Fair

Rain changed the location but not the emphasis of the Michigan State University College of Law Student Organization Fair held September 6. While the late-morning rain forced the Office of Student Affairs to move the event inside in the COL lobby and outside under cover of the COL Plaza, students weren’t deterred.

Dozens of law students, many of them in their first year, roamed from table to table gathering information from the more than 40 student organizations on hand. “I’ve gotten a lot of fliers from a lot of people,” said Emily Bluck, a first-year student from Traverse City. “It would be silly of me not to take advantage of this. It has a lot to offer.”

Thinking of a possible law career in international human rights, Bluck’s interest at the fair focused on human rights and the International Law Review. But there were many other tables as well, including the Canadian Legal Association, Law Library, State Bar Association of Michigan, Future Lawyers Against Gun Violence, Federalist Society, Triangle Bar, ACLU, and Native American Law Student Association, which drew interest thanks to the traditional burning sage the organization featured.

And, of course, there was food. Everything from oranges to ice cream to Rice Krispie Treats to bite-sized candy to the very popular baklava presented by the Middle Eastern Student Association. “It brings them in,” said Ali Saad, a third-year student, about the Middle Eastern delicacy bakery treat. He greeted visitors along with second-year students Laith Minyar and Deanna Leila. “We want people to understand our culture and enjoy it. You don’t have to be Middle Eastern to join.”

And as informative and helpful as the fair was, Bluck admitted the food didn’t hurt. “I’ve gotten a lot of candy and cookies,” she said.
