Spartan Lawyer Winter 2018

A Message from the Dean

Dear Spartan Lawyers and Friends,

Those of us who revere the legal profession know that it can be an infinitely rewarding line of work. We also know that our work presents distinct personal challenges to its practitioners. While the value of skilled legal work and the positive impact that it has on others is readily apparent, it can come at a cost.

In this issue of Spartan Lawyer, we are exploring what happiness looks like for a group of our graduates: what still inspires them about the law, what keeps them motivated throughout demanding careers, what helps them to beat the burnout – and what we can learn from them. Our featured alumni vary greatly, but they find common ground with one another (and indeed, with all of us) in their shared pursuit of a well-lived life in the legal profession.

In other news, I am proud to share with our alumni and friends that we have begun the process of full integration into Michigan State University. The Board of Trustees of the Law College voted unanimously to approve this merger in late October, following an equally supportive vote from MSU’s Board of Trustees.

We became part of the MSU community with our original affiliation over 23 years ago. At each step along the way since then, the Law College has become more tightly integrated into the fabric of the university, with full academic integration achieved some years ago. This final step will allow our students and faculty to enjoy the benefits of new interdisciplinary programs, enhanced administrative services, and increased cross-campus collaboration. I’m confident that this merger will be of tremendous benefit to the future of both the Law College and the larger university community. You will be hearing much more from us about the process as it moves forward over the next 12 to 18 months.

Finally, as we close out 2018, I am once again moved to express my gratitude for the generosity of our alumni. From the hardworking lawyers who share their expertise with our students to the accomplished graduates who host Law College events in their homes to the donors who commit their financial resources to educating tomorrow’s leaders, we offer our heartfelt thanks to all of our supporters.

One thing that we cannot say too soon – or too often – is “thank you.” On behalf of a grateful Law College community, I thank you for your past and your continued support.

I wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy start to 2019.

Regards,

Lawrence Ponoroff
