Presidents of student organizations within Michigan State University College of Law gathered Tuesday for lunch to kick off the first meeting of The Presidents’ Club.

The Presidents’ Club is the result of a meeting between the law college leadership and the Student Bar Association officers earlier this year. In an effort to open – and maintain – communications and collaboration among student organizations and the Dean’s Suite, Emily Rosberg, ’23, SBA president, organized the first meeting of The Presidents’ Club.

“This is a way to connect us as a greater MSU Law community,” said Rosberg. “I want everyone to know the resources available to us and for student leaders to establish a connection with administration.”

Dean Linda Greene told the group of her days as a student leader and emphasized the importance of student organization in higher education.

“I was a student org president during my time in undergrad and law school,” said Dean Greene. “Student organizations are a place where students find their passion being lived and respected.

“Student organizations are the reason why the legal education and education in general has come as far as it has,” she said. “Students have been at the forefront of what’s important in our lives. I have a warm place in my heart for students who step up and lead.”

This newly established network allows each organization to know what the other is planning so that they can avoid calendar conflicts as well as invite each other to their events.

“It gives student org leaders and student government a chance to keep tabs on what everyone is doing.,” said Alex Padla, ’23, president of the International Cannabis Bar Association. “With some of us law students spending out first year of law school behind a computer screen (during the pandemic), this is a great way for us to foster a community among one another.”

Taylor Hall, ’23, president of the Black Law Students Association, stated that this group is a great way to facilitate collaboration among organizations.

“We are hosting an event with the International Cannabis Bar Association this year and plan to bring in a speaker,” said Hall. “It goes to show how there are chances out there for others to collaborate within the college.”

With MSU Law working on Phase Two of the DEI Strategic Plan, Dean Greene said student organizations that get involved will help shape the law college’s next 10 years.

“We want your advice, your guidance,” Dean Greene said. “We want to learn more about your needs.”

Senior Assistant Dean for Student Experience Veronica McNally complimented the group’s commitment to MSU Law.

“I am blown away by your experience, your determination and the added value you bring to the law college,” Dean McNally said. “Your time here is short, but your impact is great.”

SBA President Rosberg closed the meeting by asking each student organization to send a liaison to the SBA as another way to ensure cross-organization communications.

“I think this will be an imperative way to connect all of the orgs together,” she said. “And remember, any student can attend any SBA meeting at any time.”

The next SBA meeting is Wed. Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the SBA Office, Room 336.
