Admission Requirements & Application Process

There are three different options for enrolling in courses offered by the MSU College of Law:

  • Students with a first degree in law from a country other than the United States may enroll in the Master of Laws in the American Legal System (LL.M.) program
  • Students with a first degree in another discipline from any country may enroll in the Master of Jurisprudence (M.J.) in the American Legal System program
  • Anyone from any background may take a course as a "guest student" and take up to six credits (2 or 3 courses)

To apply to the degree programs:

May I take a class as a “guest student” without being enrolled in the LL.M./M.J. Program?

Yes, individuals may enroll as a “guest student” without applying for the LL.M./M.J. Program. A guest student may later apply to the LL.M./M.J. Program and, if admitted, may transfer up to six (6) credits of classes taken as a guest student toward the LL.M./M.J. requirements.

How long will it take to find out if I am admitted to the LL.M./M.J. Program?

Once your application is complete, you should receive an admissions decision within 2-4 weeks, barring any unforeseen or exceptional circumstances. If your application is incomplete, the process will take longer.

How long will it take to complete the LL.M./M.J. degree?

To graduate, students must complete 24 credits. Students may take as many as 30 credits. The program can be completed in as few as two years, or as many as 5 years (or longer, in exceptional cases).

Will the LL.M. from MSU Law in Dubai qualify me to take a bar examination in the United States?

Each student should check with the board of bar examiners in the state in which they wish to take a bar examination, but generally, LL.M. degrees from satellite campuses of U.S. law schools (such as the MSU Law campus in Dubai) will not qualify an applicant to take a U.S. bar examination. As circumstances do vary from person to person, it's extremely important that you contact the board of bar examiners in the state in which you wish to sit for the bar to find out how your qualifications measure up to that board's standards, and what else you would need to do to meet those standards.

How much does it cost to take an MSU Law in Dubai class?

Tuition for the 2012-13 academic year is $995 per credit hour for all MSU Law-Dubai courses.

What are the English Language Proficiency Requirements?

LL.M./M.J. students whose first language is not English must submit a TOEFL or IELTS English test score (exceptions may be made for students with extensive English experience). Guest students do not need to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.

May I talk with current LL.M./M.J. students who are from my country?

If you would like to chat or e-mail with a student from your home country, please e-mail us at llm@law.msu.edu.

Please e-mail all questions to llm@law.msu.edu.
