Honorable Curtis Ivy, Jr. was sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of Michigan on October 2, 2020. Prior to joining the Court, he was Senior Litigation Counsel for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Alabama. In this role, he served as part of the executive team whereby he assisted the United States Attorney in supervising all criminal and civil matters handled by members of the office. His responsibilities comprised of coordinating, preparing and overseeing complex investigations and proceedings leading to litigation. Prior to becoming Senior Litigation Counsel, he was the lead prosecutor for a wide range of cases involving organized crime, white-collar crime, bank fraud, firearms, civil rights, and drug trafficking, as well as also handling appeals before the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals. Before joining the United States Attorney’s Office, Judge Ivy began his legal career in the State of Mississippi as a law clerk in the Fourth Judicial District.

He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, School of Law and worked as an adjunct professor where he taught Trial Advocacy and Civil Pretrial Practice courses. He was also a coach for the school’s National Trial and Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial teams. Similarly, he was a teaching team member in the Harvard Law School Trial Advocacy Workshop for a number of years. He also taught at the National Advocacy Center located in South Carolina. A native of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Judge Ivy is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University.
