“Going into your first year, I would open your horizons to areas you don’t think you would practice in. Look into different areas of law, volunteer, meet with practitioners, it will give you a ‘T-shaped’ spectrum to work with.”

Brian Pike, ’15, is a native Michigander experiencing Detroit’s rebirth as an Attorney, Operations and Process Analyst at the Department of Legal and Public Policy at General Motors.

“MSU positioned me for a more practical degree,” said Pike. “You can’t pay to teach students how to practice law, it is cutting edge and gives great sample career paths.”

Before his position at General Motors, Pike was a Summer Legal Clerk and Associate, as well as social media and design consultants. He stressed the point of exploring various areas of study in order to figure out what you want to do.

Pike focused on entrepreneurship and law, and received civil and domestic relations mediation certificates. He was also a part of the JD+ program, which he says introduced him to people in multiple fields, allowing him to meet with CEOs, small companies, and other future lawyers.

“Going into your first year, I would open your horizons to areas you don’t think you would practice in,” said Pike. “Look into different areas of law, volunteer, meet with practitioners, it will give you a ‘T-shaped’ spectrum to work with.”
