Commencement Speaker: The Honorable Cylenthia LaToye Miller
Judge Miller was appointed to the 36th Judicial District Court on April 10, 2006. She presides over cases from all of the Court's dockets, including Real Estate, Traffic and Ordinance, General Civil Claims under $25,000, Criminal Misdemeanor, and Felony Examinations.
Prior to her being elected judge, she was the former director of the Detroit Workforce Development Department, a Michigan Works! Agency and was also assistant general counsel to the mayor of the City of Detroit, where she performed legal research and writing for the mayor and the Executive Office staff of the City. Judge Miller has extensive experience as a labor and employment attorney, having handled all phases of traditional labor and employment litigation matters while in private practice at Lewis & Munday, P.C. and at Dykema Gossett, PLLC.
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Wayne State University in 1988. She received her Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Michigan State University-Detroit College of Law in 1996. Judge Miller was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan in 1996 and to the State Bar of Arkansas in 1997.
Judge Miller is Chair of the National Bar Association, Women Lawyers Division; secretary of the Board of Directors of the Association of Black Judges of Michigan (By-Laws Committee Chairperson & Community Outreach Chairperson); and a member of the Michigan District Judges Association Board of Directors (Newsletter Editor). She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and a member of St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church; the Wolverine Bar Association; the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan; the State Bar of Michigan; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.; and a Life Member of the National Council of Negro Women and Golden Heritage Life Member of the NAACP. Judge Miller is a past president of the Wolverine Bar Association and a past president of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan.
Throughout her career, Judge Miller has received numerous awards and honors, including the U.S. Congressional Certificate of Recognition, Cong, Shelia Jackson Lee, 2008 and City of Detroit Distinguished Service Award, 2008. Judge Miller is also a published co-author of two articles regarding employment law matters, which were published in 1998.
