A Message from the Dean

Dear Spartan Lawyers and Friends,

Our alumni have a rich legacy of leadership in the legal profession and in their communities. For the last 126 years, the graduates of this institution have served on the highest levels of Michigan’s judiciary, represented their communities as elected officials, and advocated for the common good in courtrooms across the country.

Twenty-plus years ago, we brought DCL’s proud legacy of hard work and public service to one of the world’s model land grant institutions. This has magnified our collective impact, and we are a long way from done. It is therefore fitting that this, the inaugural issue of Spartan Lawyer, celebrates the accomplishments of our alumni in government.

In this issue, you’ll learn about the ways in which our graduates serve on every level, from their state legislatures to federal agencies to their tribal councils. Their accomplishments serve as powerful testaments to the enduring value of a legal education, and they remind us why we dedicate ourselves to training tomorrow’s lawyers – and leaders.

We’re also pleased to announce the founding of the Michigan Leadership Initiative at MSU Law, which will offer incoming 1Ls unique opportunities to connect with the people who currently shape our state in industry, the judiciary, and policymaking.

Finally, I’d like to recognize the continued generosity of our supporters. It has never been more necessary, or more appreciated. It is also making a difference. It is with your ongoing help, philanthropically and beyond, that we will continue to educate the kind of passionate, talented law students who will use their education to make a difference.

I wish you and your loved ones a wonderful start to 2018.

Regards,

Lawrence Ponoroff
