Charging and Sentencing Study

A statewide analysis of charging and sentencing in death eligible murder case shows significant, strong, and consistent disparities based on the race of the victim. The statewide data analysis reveals that between 1990 and 2009 defendants in North Carolina were significantly more likely to be charged and sentenced to death if at least one of the victims was white.

A final report of the study is forthcoming.
