Diversity Week 2015 Begins

MSU Law’s 21st annual Diversity Week started on Monday, February 16 with a kickoff ceremony featuring multi-ethnic foods and opening remarks from the faculty.

Mary Ferguson, head of Diversity Services, explained this year’s theme of IN-Justice, emphasizing that justice is at the heart of the legal profession. She discussed the origins of Diversity Week: students rallying around an injustice perpetrated against one of their own.

"When they did this, our community stated that justice matters," Ferguson said.

Professor Catherine Grosso was chosen by the Diversity Consortium to open Diversity Week. Grosso, who has done research with Professor Barbara O’Brien on racial disparities in the criminal justice system, began by reminding students that lawyers are necessary.

"I believe, I really believe that the word still needs lawyers," she stated.

Grosso discussed how lawyers shape the justice system – drafting laws in the Palestinian territory, speaking on both sides of the international torture debate, and working with police officers in U.S. neighborhoods.

Diversity Consortium chairwoman Vonshay Brown reminded the community of MSU’s Safe Space hygiene drive, which collects necessities to aid people who have left their homes.

Diversity Week 2015 will equip law students with the tools to work for justice in their future legal practice. Internationally-known guest lecturers from across the academy and legal profession, panel presentations, and interactive demonstrations will bring MSU Law and the community together to promote diversity in the legal profession.
