MSU Law Presents ReInvent Law NYC

Richard SusskindMichigan State Law’s ReInvent Law Laboratory took part in a week of legal technology awareness in New York City on Friday, February 7 at the Cooper Union Great Hall. The week’s events included the first LexRedux meeting of legal startup founders and funders, the LegalTech trade show, a legal hackathon, and the ReInvent Law NYC conference. Lawyers, technology experts, entrepreneurs, academics, students and others were among those exploring future of technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the legal world.

The ReInvent Law NYC event, sponsored by the ABA Journal, MSU Law, and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, featured over 40 speakers –experts in law, technology, and business.

Six presenters were MSU Law students and faculty members. Their talks included: Professor Renee Newman Knake’s, “Is Legal Information Speech?”; ReInvent Law fellow R. Amani Smathers’s “The T-Shaped 21st Century Lawyer”; Chase Hertel’s “Immigration Evolution”; Karen Francis-McWhite’s “Hive Dynamics and Building Resilient (Legal) Communities”; Andy Ninh’s “Google Glass in Legal Practice v2.0”; and Kristen Kolakowski-Godin’s “A New Era for E-Discovery: Predictive Coding.”

Videos from the conference will be posted on ReInventLawChannel.com.

The ReInvent Law Laboratory was created by MSU Law professors Daniel Martin Katz and Renee Newman Knake in spring 2012 with a goal of incorporating the innovation of law, technology, design, and delivery into the legal services industry. Conferences have previously been held in Dubai, London, and Silicon Valley. ReInvent Law London 2014, a partnership between MSU Law and the University of Westminster, will be held Friday, June 20, 2014.
