MSU Law's Innovative Curriculum Draws National Attention

The MSU College of Law continues to attract national attention for training lawyers for the legal profession of tomorrow.

Building on the New York Time’s “This is Law School? Socrates Takes a Back Seat to Business and Tech,” MSU Law has recently been featured in blogs authored by thought leaders in the legal profession, including:

  • Kevin O’Keefe of LexBlog called MSU Law “one of the more innovative law schools in the country” for encouraging students to use social media to network and brand themselves in the legal profession.

“MSU Law provides an outstanding legal education for the profession of today and the profession that’s emerging in the 21st century,” Dean Joan W. Howarth said. “It’s very gratifying to see people recognize the great work of our outstanding faculty and our forward-thinking students.”

One way MSU Law teaches about innovative legal services is its ReInvent Law Laboratory, where students participate in weekly think-tank sessions, skill-specific coursework, workshops, and legal start-up contests. Founded by Professors Daniel Martin Katz and Renee Newman Knake, the ReInvent Lab is funded in part by the Kauffman Foundation.

“Today’s law grads need more than substantive legal knowledge,” Katz said. “Clients demand lawyers who understand their business and who leverage process improvement, project management, and technology to solve problems efficiently and effectively.”
