Michigan Supreme Court Justice to Address MSU Law Graduates at
Spring Commencement

East Lansing, MI — Michigan Supreme Court Justice Bridget Mary McCormack will present the Michigan State University College of Law spring commencement address on Friday, May 10, 2013. The Honorable Justice McCormack will speak to Class of 2013 graduates and their guests at the MSU Auditorium at 11 a.m.

Justice McCormack was elected to the Michigan Supreme Court in January of 2013.  Before her election to the court, she was a law professor and dean at the University of Michigan Law School. She is a graduate of the New York University Law School, where she won the Anne Petluck Poses Prize for Advocacy. She spent the first five years of her legal career in New York, first with the Legal Aid Society and then at the Office of Appellate Defender. In 1996, she became a faculty fellow at Yale Law School.

MSU Law Board Chairman Clifton E. Haley, '61, and Dean Joan W. Howarth will preside over the Law College's 122nd commencement exercises, conferring law degrees on 297 spring graduates. Another 30 graduates from the fall 2012 class and 18 from summer 2013 will also participate in the ceremony.

Professor Robert M. Filiatrault, '70, will receive the Honorable George N. Bashara, Jr., Distinguished Alumni Award at the ceremony. Filiatrault earned his Juris Doctor degree from Detroit College of Law in 1970. After graduating, he served as a law clerk to the Honorable Fred W. Kaess, chief judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. He joined the Law College faculty in 1971 after engaging in private practice. He is a Fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation. The award will be presented by Bryan Melvin III, '77, president of the MSU College of Law Alumni Association.

The faculty speaker for commencement will be MSU Law Professor Clark C. Johnson. Professor Johnson joined the Law College faculty in 1973 and served as associate dean from 1984 to 1985. He teaches Equity, Contracts, Equity, Insurance Law, Medical-Legal Problems, Mortgages, Property, and Secured Transactions.

Graduating student Marco C. Masciulli was selected to be the student speaker for commencement. Haley McCall, another member of the Class of 2013, will sing the national anthem. Class President Alyssa J. Doster will present the class gift.
