So they have a few extra days. Some Lansing area residents still can't resist waiting until the last minute to file their tax returns.

And local experts are ready to help.

A south Lansing H&R Block location, 1122 Holmes Road, will keep its doors open longer, offering 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. tax assistance both today and Tuesday.

Up to 200 people are expected to drop by.

"They just like waiting until the last minute," office leader Albert Walters said of his expected customers. "We're used to it."

The Internal Revenue Service's income tax deadline traditionally is April 15. But the date fell on a Sunday this year. Because today is Emancipation Day, a legal holiday in Washington, D.C., the federal agency permitted a two-day grace period.

"I'm expecting a deluge of telephone calls (and) we're going to have a torrent of walk-in clients," said Michele Halloran of the Michigan State University College of Law Tax Clinic. "Our mission really is to help everybody we possibly can."
