Student Experience
On a Saturday night in East Lansing, one is equally likely to find MSU LL.M. students sharing their favorite home-cooked meals from their homelands, hanging out at one of the city’s night spots, studying as a group in the Law College library, relieving stress with a game of basketball or soccer, or having a late-night snowball fight on one of MSU’s scenic, park-like stretches of nature.
The LL.M. program is home to approximately 70 students who come together as a family while they are away from their loved ones in more than 25 home countries. Celebrating national and religious holidays together and educating one another about customs, beliefs, and traditions from their countries, LL.M. students join with their American classmates to recognize important dates on the U.S. holiday calendar, as well.
MSU Law’s Office of Graduate and International Programs, Office of Diversity Services, LL.M. Student Association, and other groups present numerous educational, cultural, and social gatherings throughout the year, including the following:
The annual Law College Thanksgiving, hosted by the Office of Graduate and International Programs, complete with halal turkey
- Eid, Chinese New Year, Christmas, and other holiday celebrations
- Visits to area court rooms and the Michigan Supreme Court
- Weekly LL.M. lunches with faculty and visiting speakers
- Weekly football (soccer), basketball and other sports activities
- Movie nights
The LL.M. Student Association also joins with other international student groups on campus to celebrate holidays, host events, and otherwise interact with the university’s larger international and student community. MSU has more than 250 student groups, in addition to more than 50 at the Law College. MSU Law LL.M. students may join any Law College student group or any MSU graduate or other student group, making the possibilities for making friends and professional connections endless.
MSU College of Law LL.M. students also find that MSU’s numerous resources for international students—including host families, the English Language Center, and strong community support—make MSU feel like home.
