LL.M. Application Information
The Master in Laws (LL.M.) Program for Foreign-Educated Lawyers provides a rigorous academic program to advance the legal training of those who have completed their legal education in a foreign jurisdiction.
Admissions Requirements: Skills and Qualifications
Strong English writing and verbal skills as well as a solid conceptual understanding of basic legal theory are expected of all participants.
Evidence of a formal higher education, as evidenced by transcripts of any degrees earned; and
Evidence of legal training or admission to the practice of law in the applicant’s country of practice.
Admissions Requirements: Documentation
Applicants must submit the following to the MSU College of Law Admissions Office to be considered for admission:
- Application for admission to the LL.M. for Foreign-Educated Lawyers (PDF)
- Copies of all transcripts from degree-granting institutions, translated into English if necessary (link to CAS site and WES)
- Personal statement detailing interest in the LL.M. Program at MSU College of Law
- In most cases TOEFL scores from either the written or the computer-based TOEFL test
Enrollment and Visa Requirements
Michigan State University College of Law will work with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to obtain visas for foreign attorneys studying in the LL.M. Program. For additional information about visa issues, please contact Linda Hall, MSU Law SEVIS Coordinator, at halllin@law.msu.edu.
After admission, students in the LL.M. Program will submit the following as required by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Michigan State University College of Law:
- Proof of health insurance for use in the United States
- Proof of financial support sufficient for tuition and other costs while studying in the United States
- Enrollment deposit of $400
