The MSU Law Library Bookmark Collection

The Law Librarians have developed a collection of bookmarks to facilitate legal research using free Internet sources. This collection supports federal and Michigan-based research, but resources for other U.S. jurisdictions are included to some extent. You are welcome to download this collection for your personal use. The collection was last updated in January of 2008 to incorporate address changes and new sites. Browser importation directions are set out below.

Importing the collection into Internet Explorer’s Favorites folder

  1. Before you start this process, you might want to create a folder in "Favorites" to hold the collection. This will enable you to segregate the bookmarks for easier updating in the future. This step is recommended but not required.
    1. With Internet Explorer open, click on the "Favorites" pull-down menu (Favorites on your computer may be represented by a star symbol)
    2. Click on "Organize Favorites"
    3. Click on "New Folder"
    4. Enter a name for the new folder, e.g., "Legal Research"
    5. Click on "Close"
  2. Download the bookmark collection from the Web, saving it temporarily on your hard drive in some obvious place, e.g., the Desktop.
    1. Click here to open the bookmark collection
    2. With the bookmark collection on the screen, click on the "File" drop down menu
    3. Click on "Save As"
    4. Use the "Save As Type:" pull-down menu to select "Web Page, HTML Only" [Warning: This is critical--importation will not occur if you save the bookmarks as "Web Page, Complete"]
    5. If necessary, use the "Save In:" pull-down menu to direct the file to a temporary holding site on your hard drive, e.g., the Desktop
    6. Note the name of the file--you need to recognize it to import it
    7. Click on "Save"
  3. Import the bookmark collection into your "Favorites"
    1. Click on Internet Explorer’s "File" pull-down menu
    2. Select "Import and Export"
    3. Click on "Next"
    4. Be sure "Import Favorites" is selected
    5. Click on "Next"
    6. Select "Import from a File or Address"
    7. Click on "Browse"
    8. Locate and select the file you downloaded to your computer in Step #2
    9. Click on the “Next”
    10. Select the destination folder, e.g., the "Legal Research" folder you created in Step #1
    11. Click on "Next"
    12. Click on "Finish"

Importing the collection into Mozilla's Bookmarks

  1. Download the bookmark collection from the Web, saving it temporarily in some obvious place, e.g., the Desktop.
    1. Click here to go to the bookmark collection
    2. With the bookmark collection on your screen, click on the "File" drop down menu
    3. Click on "Save As"
    4. Use the "Save As Type" pull-down menu to select "Web Page, HTML only"
    5. Use the "Save In" pull-down menu to direct the file to its temporary holding site on your hard drive, e.g., the Desktop
    6. Note the name of the file--you need to recognize it to import it
    7. Click on "Save"
  2. Import the bookmark collection into your "Bookmarks"
    1. Now click on "Bookmarks" on the toolbar
    2. Click on "Manage Bookmarks"
    3. Click on the "File" pull-down menu
    4. Click on"Import"
    5. Use the pull-down menu if necessary to locate the saved bookmark collection on your hard drive, e.g., the Desktop
    6. Select the file, then click on "Open"
