MSU College of Law

Logistics — 6th Annual Junior Scholars in IP Workshop

Dear JSIP Participant:

I hope the following information will answer many of your questions about our upcoming October 4-5 Junior Scholars in Intellectual Property Workshop (JSIP).

I. Lodging & Transport

Rooms will be reserved in each of your names at the Candlewood Suites East Lansing
East Lansing, 3545 Forest Rd, Lansing, MI 48910; (517) 351-8181, for two nights (check-in Thursday, October 3; check-out Saturday, October 5).  MSU Law College will cover the cost of your hotel room.  If you need to make changes to your hotel reservation, please contact Sally Rice,

We recommend flying into Lansing Capital City Airport (LAN), which is a 15 minute car ride from the MSU campus.  The Law College will arrange pick-up from the Lansing airport and transportation to the hotel by the Candlewood Suites shuttle.  We will provide separate van transportation to/from the Law College on Friday and Saturday.

Sally Rice, the MSU College of Law’s events manager, will oversee travel and conference logistics.  Therefore, please send Sally Rice your travel itinerary, unless you booked flights through Passageways Travel (in which case Sally already has the information).  Sally can also arrange campus parking permits for those who choose to drive.  Please contact Sally at:; (517) 432-6955.

II.  Meals

The Law College will provide meals throughout the Workshop, starting with breakfast on Friday through Saturday lunch.  All meals will be served at the Law College, with the exception of the conference dinner on Friday night, which will be held in the Galaxy Room of the MSU Kellogg Center.  If you have special dietary needs, please notify Sally Rice at your earliest convenience.

In addition, there will be a welcome dinner reception on Thursday, October 3, at the University Club on 3435 Forest Rd.  The University Club is located two buildings down from the Candlewood Suites Hotel, on the same side of the road.  To get there, walk across the parking lot in front of the James B. Henry Executive Center (which is immediately adjacent to the Candlewood) and continue west along Forest Road to the enter the University Club building.  The reception will be held in the Fireplace Room from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

III.  Workshop Logistics & Format

The Workshop will take place in the Castle Boardroom (room 343) on the third floor of the Law College Building at Michigan State University.  We will begin around 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning and will conclude the final session around midday Saturday, followed by a luncheon.  The dress code will be business casual.

Please note that the format of the JSIP Workshop is somewhat unusual:  In order to allow more time for discussion, authors do not present their own papers.  Instead, the first commentator will provide a brief  summary of the paper's main argument(s) before launching into his/her critique.  The first commentator will be allocated 13 minutes for this task, followed by 10 minutes for the second commentator.  Authors will then be permitted 5 minutes to respond to the commentators before the floor is opened to general discussion for a further 22 minutes (for a total of 50 minutes allotted per paper).

We encourage a robust exchange of views by all participants (not just commentators). Because the papers will not be presented as such at the Workshop itself, we ask that you read as many papers in advance as possible.

We are very much looking forward to a successful Workshop.  As ever, feel free to contact me with any specific questions or concerns.

Best regards,
