Logistics — 5th Annual Junior Scholars in IP Workshop

Thank you for participating in the 5th Annual Junior Scholars IP Workshop (JSIP) at Michigan State University College of Law. The following is some basic information to assist you.

  1. Schedule

The Workshop will take place all day Wednesday, May 30 and continue on the morning of Thursday, May 31, concluding around noon (a luncheon will follow). We ask that all participants attend for the entire duration of the Workshop. In order that we may begin promptly Wednesday morning, please plan to arrive by Tuesday night, May 29. We will have an (optional) dinner reception Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Marriott.

  2. Lodging

Rooms will be reserved in each of your names at the East Lansing Marriott at University Place, 300 M.A.C Avenue, East Lansing, MI 48823, 517-337-4440, for two nights (check-in Tuesday, May 29; check-out Thursday, May 31). MSU Law College will cover accommodation costs. If you would like to change your reservation, please contact Sally Rice, the MSU College of Law’s events manager, ricesa@law.msu.edu; 517-432-6955.

  3. Transport

We encourage flying into Lansing Capital City Airport, which is a 15 minutes car ride from the MSU campus. Other regional airports include Detroit Metro Airport, which is roughly 90 minutes from East Lansing, and Flint and Grand Rapids, each of which are around an hour’s drive.

The Marriott provides free shuttle service to/from Lansing Airport. Those of you flying into Lansing should contact Sally Rice with your arrival time, and she will arrange your shuttle pick-up by the hotel. We will provide separate van transportation to/from the Law College on Wednesday and Thursday. We can also arrange taxi service for who wish to head directly to Lansing Airport at the conclusion of the Workshop.

For those who will be driving, please contact to Sally Rice, to arrange for a campus parking permit. Sally can also assist with travel and conference logistics generally.

  4. Meals

The Law College will provide meals throughout the Workshop, starting with breakfast on Wednesday through lunch on Thursday. If you have special dietary needs, please notify Sally Rice. All meals will be served at the Law College, with the exception of the conference dinner on Wednesday night, which will be held at the MSU Kellogg Center, and the pre-Workshop reception on Tuesday night, held at Bistro 43 at the Marriott.

  5. Workshop Location & Format

The Workshop will take place in the Castle Boardroom (room 343) on the third floor of the Law College Building at Michigan State University. Business casual dress; wireless access will be available via the open “lawguest” network.

Please note that the format of the JSIP Workshop is slightly unusual in that authors do not present their own papers. Instead, we ask that participants read in advance as many Workshop papers as possible (posted on this website). In addition, there will be two designated commentators for each paper. The first commentator will provide a brief summary of the paper's main argument(s) before launching into his/her critique. The first commentator will have 13 minutes for this task, followed by 10 minutes for the second commentator. Authors will then have 3-5 minutes to respond to the commentators before the floor is opened to general discussion for a further 22-24 minutes (for a total of 50 minutes per paper).
