Immersion Week: Foundations of Law

Message from Professors Fletcher, Grosso, O'Brien and Dean Howarth

During Immersion Week all incoming students will take a required one-week course, Foundations of Law, which the four of us will be teaching. The primary focus of Foundations of Law is to provide first-year students with an introduction to the study of law, including preliminary exposure to legal reasoning, the structure of the U.S. legal system, fundamental legal concepts, and effective class preparation and participation.

The first assignment is to read the entire book, What Every Law Student Really Needs to Know: An Introduction to the Study of Law by Tracey E. George & Suzanna Sherry (Aspen 2009), prior to the first class. We will post a syllabus for each section, including additional assignments, on August 5th. In the meantime, please obtain the George & Sherry book now to give yourself plenty of time to finish it before August 19th. The book can be purchased at the Spartan Bookstore (, the on-campus source for MSU Law texts, or through your preferred source for books. You need to read the entire book before August 19th, but do not need to memorize any of it, do the exercises, or answer study questions during this initial reading.

As your first MSU Law professors, we look forward to welcoming you in person on August 19th. For now, enjoy the remaining weeks of your summer.
