Summer Aid Information

**PLEASE NOTE THAT SUMMER 2014 FINANCIAL AID IS PART OF THE 2013-2014 FINANCIAL AID YEAR IN STU-INFO SO YOU MAY NEED TO CHANGE THE AID YEAR AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN.**

In order to receive summer aid you must have a valid 2013-2014 FAFSA on file with the Office of Financial Aid. The application deadline for the 2013-2014 FAFSA is June 30, 2014.  You do not need to update the 2013-2014 FAFSA to indicate your interest in summer aid.  In addition, if you indicated on your 2013-2014 that you would like to receive summer aid, then you must still submit a request through STU-INFO ("Check Your Aid") as instructed below.

You must have at least three (3) credits to receive a Stafford Loan and/or GradPLUS for summer. However, some private loans can be processed for less than half-time enrollment. *Please note that summer Stafford Loans can impact your eligibility for Stafford Loans for fall.*

Summer aid is not awarded automatically. You must request summer aid by logging into STU-INFO and clicking on "Apply for Summer Aid" on the Overview page.

We encourage students to sign up for direct deposit, especially students who will be studying abroad for summer. Download the direct deposit form (PDF) from the Office of Accounting.

Summer budgets are listed below.  All budgets will be adjusted for students enrolled in fewer than four credits who are receiving a private loan.  Summer tuition for MSU Law courses including externships is $1,236 per credit hour.

Scholarships from the College of Law will be automatically added for summer and will cover College of Law credits only, including reduced-tuition study abroad courses and externships (see below). Students who also want loan for the summer must follow the regular application process above.

You may contact the Office of Financial Aid at finaid@law.msu.edu if you have questions.

Please note: students who receive a federal loan disbursement and drop below three credits before the end of the 100% refund period will have all federal loan funds returned to Direct Loans resulting in a bill.

Summer Study Abroad (MSU College of Law programs - projected budgets)

Financial Aid for MSU College of Law study abroad programs will function similarly to regular on-campus courses. MSU College of Law will process your financial aid and disburse it to your student account. You can find information about MSU Study abroad programs here.

**Please note that all airfare costs for study abroad programs is based on projected costs for flights from Detroit.  However financial aid for airfare is not available until summer. You may be able to request a cash advance from Accounting by contacting them at acctg@law.msu.edu **

Tuition for the Poland, Croatia, London and Japan programs only is $900 per credit hour.

Costs can be dramatically affected by individual budgetary habits and the fluctuations of currency exchange rates against the dollar. All students should approach the prospect of living abroad with maturity and a sense of financial responsibility.

Budget Increases

Requests for budget increases for additional credits above the the four already included in the budget will be considered AFTER the drop/add period has ended.  ***Please note that if you drop credits after a budget increase has been processed, then your loans may be reduced and you may receive a bill.***

Summer Work-Study

Work-Study is available to students during summer.  However, students must be enrolled and attending classes (or working at an externship) half-time during the entire period of employment.  If the student is not enrolled half-time while earning Work-Study, or is not enrolled at all for summer but wishes to receive Work-Study, then any Work-Study income during this period will be counted against his or her federal aid eligibility in the following fall.  If you are graduating in the summer of 2014 then you must be enrolled half-time during the entire period of employment as stipulated above.

Summer Study Abroad or Visit Out (non-MSU College of Law programs)

If you wish to receive summer financial aid for a study abroad program or courses at another school you must first complete a Visiting Student Permission Form (VSPF), which is available in the Registrar's Office. If your courses from the "host" school are approved for transfer to MSU College of Law (the "home" school) then a copy of your VSPF will be forwarded to the Office of Financial Aid. The Office of Financial Aid will then complete and email a consortium agreement to the host school asking them to detail costs for your program and courses. Once the consortium agreement is returned to the Office of Financial Aid, we will compile a specific budget for your program and make a financial aid offer. You must then follow all necessary steps (for example, logging into "Check Your Aid", accepting your Stafford Loans, pursuing a private/GradPLUS loan) in order to secure your summer aid.

MSU College of Law will process your financial aid; you need do nothing for financial aid with the host school.

Refunds will be issued by MSU College of Law and we do encourage you to enroll in direct deposit (PDF).

Please note: The Office of Financial Aid will issue a check directly to your host school for any expenses you owe to them, unless we have written confirmation from the school that you have paid all expenses in full, before issuing you a refund. If you need a cash advance then you should see the Office of Accounting, Room 306.

Summer Aid and Externships

Students enrolled for an externship for summer 2014 will be offered the thrifty summer budget. However, the budget can be increased once the Office of Financial Aid receives a copy of the externship form from the Office of Career Services, or if the student requests the standard budget as noted above. We will need the dates of employment before a budget increase can be processed.
