Summer Aid Information

In order to receive summer aid you must have a valid 2011-2012 FAFSA on file with the Office of Financial Aid. If you need to file the FAFSA you may use the following link. The application deadline for the 2011-2012 FAFSA is June 30, 2012:

You must have at least three (3) credits to receive a Stafford Loan and/or GradPLUS for summer. However, some private loans can be processed for less than half-time enrollment. *Please note that summer Stafford Loans can impact your eligibility for Stafford Loans in the Fall 2012.*

Summer aid is not awarded automatically, even if you indicated summer enrollment on your FAFSA. You must request summer aid by logging in to eFinaid clicking on "SUMMER aid application/status" under "Action Items".

Scholarship students who want to use ONLY their award for summer classes--and will not need federal aid--must request application of their scholarship to summer charges by emailing the Office of Financial Aid at finaid@law.msu.edu

We encourage students to sign up for direct deposit, especially students who will be studying abroad for summer. Download the direct deposit form (PDF) from the Office of Accounting.

Summer budgets are listed below.  All budgets will be adjusted for students enrolled in fewer than four credits who are receiving a private loan.  Summer tuition for MSU Law courses including externships is $1,188 per credit hour.

Please note: students who receive a federal loan disbursement and drop below three credits before the end of the 100% refund period will have all federal loan funds returned to Direct Loans resulting in a bill.

**Please note that all airfare costs for study abroad programs are based on flights from Detroit to the nearest major city and are ESTIMATED. Your cost for airfare can be influenced by many factors such as fuel costs and when you purchase the ticket.  The cost for airfare can be much lower, and in some cases higher, than the estimate provided.**

Tuition for the Poland, Croatia, London and Japan programs is $900 per credit hour.

Summer Study Abroad (non-MSU College of Law programs)

If you wish to receive summer financial aid for a study abroad program at another school you must first complete a Visiting Student Permission Form (VSPF), which is available at the Registrar's Office. If your courses from the "host" school are approved for transfer to MSU College of Law (the "home" school) then a copy of your VSPF will be forwarded to the Office of Financial Aid. The Office of Financial Aid will then complete and fax a consortium agreement to the host school asking your host school to detail costs for your program and courses. Once the consortium agreement is returned to the Office of Financial Aid, we will compile a specific budget for your program and make a financial aid offer. You must then follow all necessary steps (for example, accepting your Stafford Loans, pursuing a private/GradPLUS loan) in order to secure your summer aid.

MSU College of Law will process your financial aid; you need do nothing for financial aid with the host school. We will disburse financial aid 10 days prior to the first day of your program.

Refunds will be issued by MSU College of Law and we do encourage you to enroll in direct deposit (PDF).

Please note: The Office of Financial Aid will issue a check directly to your host school for any expenses you owe to them, unless we have written confirmation from the school that you have paid all expenses in full, before issuing you a refund. If you need a cash advance then you should see the Office of Accounting, room 306.

Summer Aid and Externships

Students enrolled for an externship for summer 2012 will follow the on-campus budget. However, the budget can be increased once the Office of Financial Aid receives a copy of the externship form from the Office of Career Services. We will need the dates of employment before a budget increase can be processed.
