Dean Alsup earned his Ph.D. in higher, adult, and lifelong education from Michigan State University in 2007. He is an alumnus of Michigan State University College of Law, having earned his J.D., cum laude, in 1990. He received an M.A. in business management from Central Michigan University in 1977 and a B.A. in political science from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1974.

In law school, Dean Alsup was a member of Law Review, president of the Wolverine Student Bar Association, and a teaching assistant for Research, Writing, and Advocacy. Following law school graduation, Dean Alsup taught Research, Writing, and Advocacy and Professional Responsibility at MSU Law, and Business Law at the American Institute for Paralegal Studies.

He began his career in student affairs at MSU College of Law in 1994 as the assistant dean for student affairs and financial aid director. His responsibilities expanded in 2001 to include oversight of the Registrar’s Office, and again in 2007 when he also assumed oversight of the newly created Diversity Service Office. Prior to his academic career, he was a buyer for both General Motors Corporation and Ford Motor Company. Dean Alsup went on to work for 14 years at Comerica Bank, where he served in various capacities in branch banking. He ended his banking career as assistant vice president in the Special Assets Group.

Dean Alsup currently serves as a member of the State Bar of Michigan Standing Committee on Character and Fitness. He also has served as a member of the Association of American Law Schools Student Services Section Executive Committee and the Detroit College of Law Alumni Association Board of Directors.
