Stacy L. Erwin Oakes, ’01

Stacy Erwin Oakes, Esq. was born and raised in Saginaw, MI.  She is a product of the Saginaw Public School District. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Ferris State University and later earned her teaching certification from Saginaw Valley State of University while working as a corrections officer at the Saginaw Correctional Facility. After obtaining her teaching certificate, she accepted a position with the Saginaw Public School District and taught at Central Middle and Saginaw High School while coaching girls' basketball at Saginaw High School.

Oakes earned her law degree from Michigan State University while working for the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. While in law school she participated in the Rental Housing Clinic.  Upon graduation from law school, Oakes accepted a position with the Michigan House of Representatives as a policy analyst. She was later appointed to the Michigan Attorney General’s Office, serving under both Attorney General Jennifer Granholm and Mike Cox. As an assistant attorney general, she prosecuted and defended cases throughout the State of Michigan.

In February 2010, Oakes was appointed to the Michigan State University College of Law Board of Trustees and served as a board member for Saginaw County Community Action Committee. She currently serves a board member for the Great Lakes Bay YWCA.  In the fall of 2010, Oakes became the first women ever elected as a State Representative for the 95th District in a special election and served until December of 2014. 

Oakes has received the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Small Business Award, and the Ruby Award which is presented to a select group of upward, bright, and young professionals in the Great Lakes Bay Region. She has also received the YWCA’s Women of Achievement Award for her community involvement. As the Founder of the Legacy Civic Fund, that focuses on improving the quality of life of individuals through education and recognizes those who have lived a life worthy of the Legacy Award, she believes to whom much is given much is required. 

Currently, Oakes serves as President of Erwin Properties, LLC, which is a development company, and has developed Erwin Senior Estates in Buena Vista Township. She is also a partner at Oakes Law Group.
