The OSE’s health and wellness initiatives help you embrace healthy habits as you navigate the unique demands of law school. The office’s compassionate and professional staff provide one-on-one counseling and referrals to outside resources if you find yourself facing any personal challenges. We understand that such matters may also impact your academic performance at the Law College.   • MSU College of Law Reasonable ADA Accommodation Policy

    Pursuant to the requirements of the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), students with a documented disability may receive reasonable accommodations as authorized by the Assistant Dean for Student and Academic Affairs.

    ADA accommodation requests for exams must be initiated by the end of the 4th week of classes. Requests for classroom accommodations should be made as soon as possible. Accommodations are not granted retroactively. Current College of Law students, who require accommodations, should be referred to the Office of Student Engagement – Law Building room 308 | 517-432-6835 | http://www.law.msu.edu/engagement

    Following are the reasonable accommodation procedures for current or prospective students.

    1. Prospective and current MSU students needing an accommodation are required to self- identify as a person with a disability and make a written request for an accommodation with The Office of Student Engagement by filling out an Accommodation Request Form (PDF). Once sufficient documentation is received, the Office of Student Engagement will contact the student to set up a needs assessment to fully discuss accommodation requests.

    2. Prospective and current MSU students must provide the Assistant Dean for Student and Academic Affairs with medical documentation of the disability. Documentation establishing the presence of a disability and explaining the nature and degree to which the disability affects major life activities, including learning, is essential for accurately determining appropriate accommodations.

        • Guidelines: The student must provide documentation from a licensed medical professional that includes a medical and/or psychological evaluation, diagnosis, and accommodation recommendations. Testing must have been conducted within the last three (3) years in order to be considered for special accommodation. Requests for accommodations of DSM-5 disorders must be supported by documentation that satisfies MSU Law’s Minimum Standards for Documentation (PDF). All information regarding an individual’s disability is confidential and used on an as-needed basis to provide reasonable accommodations.

    3. After documentation of a disability has been provided and a needs assessment completed, reasonable accommodations are determined. What constitutes a reasonable accommodation will vary depending on the circumstances of each case. In evaluating alternatives for accommodation, the preferences of the individual are considered, but the ultimate decision regarding what type of accommodation, if any, will be provided is made by the Assistant Dean for Student and Academic Affairs.

    4. Academic requirements may be adjusted, as necessary, to ensure that they do not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities. Academic adjustments may be required unless they are essential to the program of instruction being pursued, or to any directly related accreditation requirement.

    5. When an accommodation is granted, the Office of Student Engagement will send the student an email detailing the granted accommodations.

    6. Students are responsible for providing relevant accommodation information to faculty, ideally prior to or during the first week of class or as soon as possible. They should also maintain proactive dialog with faculty including prior to in class exams, projects, and semester assignments where accommodations are needed.

    7. Faculty are responsible for maintaining confidentiality and for facilitating accommodations or adjustments outlined by the Assistant Dean for Student and Academic Affairs. Faculty should direct any questions about the implementation of the proscribed accommodation to the Assistant Dean for Student and Academic Affairs.
