Justice Alton Davis

A member of the Moot Court Team as a student, Justice Davis, '74, has retired from the Michigan Supreme Court and you can help us celebrate by joining this fun night of networking, reminiscing, and celebrating with Justice Davis, and learning more about the MSU College of Law Moot Court Program.

Justice Alton Davis was appointed to the Michigan Supreme Court by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm in 2010. Prior to his time with the Supreme Court, Davis was appointed to the Michigan Court of Appeals for the 4th District and subsequently was elected to the Court in 2006 and again in 2008 without opposition. Justice Davis served as a visiting judge on the Court of Appeals on several occasions between 1985-1996.

Prior to his appointment to the Court of Appeals, Justice Davis was the chief judge of the 46th Judicial Circuit of Michigan. Before being elected to the trail bench, he was in private practice for ten years. During that time he also served for four years as chief assistant prosecuting attorney and prosecuting attorney in Crawford County.

Justice Davis has been involved in a multitude of professional, public, and civic organizations. He is a 1974 graduate of the Detroit College of Law. Justice Davis is married to Sandra Kay Shellfish and is the father of two daughters and two sons-in-law—Brion and Jason Thompson and Colby and Tim Chilcote, and grandfather of Benjamin.
