"U.S. Constitution: Current Debates and Novel Ideas"
Time and Location: 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. in the Castle Boardroom (Room 343) of the Law College

Professor Susan Bitensky - "The Abolitionists' Dream Come True: Invoking the Thirteenth Amendment to Make Corporal Punishment of Children Unconstitutional"

Professor Bitensky will discuss how corporal punishment reduces children to a condition akin to slavery, thereby making the practice a violation of the Amendment's Section 1. She will also discuss how Congress is empowered to legislate, under the Amendment's Section 2, a ban on such punishment as a badge and incident of slavery.

Professor Kevin Saunders - "Constitutional Theory Issues Raised in the Sotomayor Confirmation Hearings"

Comments by a number of Senators seemed to make assumptions about the Constitution or about constitutional adjudication that are actually open issues. A number of those issues will be explored.
