Rental Housing Clinic Testimonials
The following testimonials were collected from various course evaluations completed by Rental Housing Clinic students:
This was an excellent course. The practical experience is invaluable. I now have an excellent understanding of Landlord/Tenant law.
The fact that you have real people depending on your advice motivates you to make sure you know what you are talking about. Excellent course!
The course was very demanding. The cases I had were very challenging. The clients I had were very challenging to assist. However, I think the experience I had with the clinic I will use in practice for the rest of my life. Thus, I can’t imagine a better class to have in law school.
I learned more here than in my first year of law school. Very hands-on and the professors make us work to find the answer. This, or a clinic like this, should be required before graduation.
I think the clinic was a great opportunity to learn first hand how to deal with clients and with the opposing party. It was very important for me to work to my best ability in order to serve my clients.
All of the professors were very helpful in presenting the issues of law. Real life practice was very demanding. I feel that at times the work load for the clinic was worth at least four credit hours. Overall it was a great experience. I know that the clinic experience was the reason I received three summer associate offers.
Great class for learning the law.
Great experience working with real clients! Great class!
Clinic work is so much different from theoretical learning in the classroom – so much actual application! Great experience!
Thanks so much for the insight of how to prepare for a new area of law/study. This technique ought to be part of new student orientation.
It gave me the opportunity to apply legal theory to real life situations! It gave me more confidence and practice with thinking on my feet.
Not only has she given us an adequate grasp of the subject matter, she has taught us to rely on ourselves to learn the law. It was the best experience I’ve had in law school.
It was very effective how we learned the basic law first, and then were able to practically apply it to real-life situations. Since we were actually representing and/or assisting people, I always strove to do my best. Excellent class – overall great experience.
There was a lot of info at first but once the clinic portion kicked in, everything became much more understandable. New challenges arose each day as to different topics with different clients. It kept the course both interesting and challenging. This was a great course. It helped me learn so much in the area of landlord-tenant law and in office practice, court practice, and in general.
Great enthusiasm for motivating success of clinicians.
Class time was used to familiarize the students with the clinic and how to problem solve for intakes. Instead of never opening a book to read a case, I willingly went to the law to find uses relevant to a client’s interests. I wish the school would give more money to the clinic so we could have a better library to use. The school should give more recognition to the clinics because we certainly aren’t learning anything in the classroom by reading case books. We learn from practical application. We learn that people have feelings and you can’t recite what you’ve learned in class. I learned how to deal with other attorneys and that there are some idiots out there. I learned that I truly love law and that I love helping people. No other class in law school has ever made me feel that way.
This clinic has provided me with an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience. I was able to participate in client counseling all the way through trial. I learned that ethically we should be problem solvers and not problem creators. The clinic provided us with many teachable moments.
The balance between teaching concepts and identity learning to apply the law was perfect. Though it may be frustrating when a professor says “here is the book, you tell me,” I learned so much from it. Overall, my experiences were amazing! I only wish that the clinical programs were expanded to include other areas of the law.
Very challenging course! Enjoyed it!
Very motivating because it was real law suits and real clients.
Not only do you have to have a grasp of the subject matter, in a clinic class you have to have the understanding of how to apply it to practical, real life situations. Both Professors gave us the foundations to deal with all situations presented to throughout the term. This was the only class in law school which I actually learned from. I got to deal with clients, the law, and applied to people lives which I will be doing for the next 35 years. I believe that a law student will be completely lost right out of law school if they don’t take a clinic class and don’t have a chance to apply the law to real situations and therefore a clinic class is important.
Being throw right in is the quickest way to learn. I wish there was a Rental Housing Clinic III.
The course has been very challenging and I have learned so much. I do wish the class was for more credits.
The teaching style is excellent. We were walked through the 1st five weeks and were cut loose to find our own answers after that. The experience was invaluable to me. Some type of clinical work should be required of all students.
Learned invaluable skills in the clinic. I will no doubt take with me throughout my entire careers.
The class was very fun and enlightening. The real world experiences push you to do your best so that you can respect yourself and the law school well. Everyone should have to do a clinic to get a real understanding of how the law works.
This course really was the best thing I have done so far. Clinical experiences are very invaluable. Good learning experience. A lot of work inside and outside of clinic. But it is real good to have this experience and get over the fear of practicing law.
The course is very demanding but you learn a lot.
RHC II is different in that there are no “class” sessions. However, I learned the substantive material last semester and was able to put it into practice on many occasions this semester. The “doing” part is what makes us learn.
Participating in clinical program has given me a firm grasp of the nuts and bolts of legal practice. I am a lot more confident in my professional competency than I was before I took this course.
This is a wonderful program, especially if a law student wants practical experience.
Clinical experience is a practical opportunity to do a lawyers work with the safety blanket of wonderful supervisors. The professor made sure we took each step to learn the material and to apply it to solve real-life dilemmas.
The clinical program was very hands-on course. Great way to learn practical legal work.
A clinic of some sort should be required before graduation.
The clinic program has been the best thing I’ve done in law school. Every student should do a clinical. Ethical considerations, community service, and legal problem solving in one experience- you can not top this experience in law school. Professor Pierce and Ulicki are honestly the best professors I’ve ever had. This clinical program and these professors give so much to our community. I’ve learned more in ten (10) weeks than in the last year about practicing law.
I felt this was the best class I’ve taken in law school. This course requires a lot of time and effort. Both the professors are great and I would encourage everyone in law school to take the clinic before graduating.
I thought this course was very interesting and educational. This is probably the most effective course I have take in law school because of the practical experience gained that is not gained from book-based courses.
I thought this was a really great class. This class not only taught me about tenancy, but incorporated all the other classes in have taken. I would recommend that every law student take this class.
The clinical program is by far, the best program offered at the school. I have learned how to practice law, how to counsel clients, and why pro bono work is such a vital part of our profession.
The class is very demanding and time consuming, but overall, the program was excellent, well worth the time and very helpful.
This was one of the best classes I’ve taken in law school. Much of what I learned here will translate into practice, and for that I’m grateful. This class should have worth more credits though.
The experience that I have gained by working as a clinical resident at Michigan State University College of Law Rental Housing Clinic is invaluable. By taking classroom knowledge and applying it to realistic situations, I have grown as a young attorney. Learning how to manage case files, master client counseling skills, and help real people with real legal problems has not only been personally rewarding, but has been, and will continue to increase my appreciation for the practice of law.
My time at the Rental Housing Clinic has been a very rewarding and enriching experience. It was definitely one of the best decisions I have made in law school. I have learned so much about the practice of law through hands-on experience. My experience has brought together much that I have learned in law school. I feel that it will definitely be advantageous to me when I enter the legal profession.
I participated in the Rental Housing Clinic in the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 semesters at the urging of a former clinician. Without question, my clinical experience was the single most rewarding and influential of my law school career. It was the only course I took which focused primarily on practical application and procedure. Due to the structure and requirements of the Clinic I will graduate with a much better understanding of the rules, regulations and procedures that govern my profession. And for that experience, I am grateful.
The MSU College of Law Rental Housing Clinic provided me with the unique opportunity to take what I had learned in the classroom and apply it to the "real world." The clinical setting helped me sharpen my writing skills, improve my interpersonal skills, and hone my analytical skills. Moreover, interacting with clients on a daily basis helped me learn the art of client interviewing and client counseling. The practical legal experience I gained as a clinician subsequently helped me excel as a summer law clerk. Overall, the Clinic was an invaluable experience and an important part of my legal education.
