MSU-DCL welcomes
New Faculty Members
|
With the opening of the new school year, MSU-DCL has added a number of faculty members. Joining the college as assistant professors are Daniel D. Barnhizer and Glen A. Staszewski while Catherine T. Dwyer and Elliot A. Spoon are professors in residence, and Kevin W. Saunders, Victor L. Streib and Michael J. Zimmer are visiting professors.

Daniel D. Barnhizer is assistant professor of law at MSU-DCL.
Professor Barnhizer graduated with honors from Harvard Law School, where he served as managing editor of the Harvard Environmental Law Review. After graduation, he was a judicial clerk for the Honorable Richard L. Nygaard, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, and for the Honorable Robert B. Krupansky, U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit, sitting by designation on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. Professor Barnhizer has practiced as a litigator with the law firms of Hogan & Hartson, L.L.P. and Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft. Before joining the MSU-DCL faculty, he was an adjunct professor of law at American University-Washington College of Law, where he taught legal reasoning, research and writing. At MSU-DCL he teaches contracts, land use and planning, and small business enterprises.

Catherine T. Dwyer is a professor in residence with a joint appointment at Michigan State Universitys Eli Broad College of Business. Early in her career, Professor Dwyer joined Mudge Rose Guthrie & Alexander of New York City in the litigation and corporate departments. She went on to become corporate counsel at Automatic Data Processing in New Jersey and New York, and at Genigraphics Corporation in Connecticut. She joined BISYS Group in New Jersey as vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary, handling litigation, commercial transactions, strategic planning, corporate governance, acquisitions, and securities administration. She was a business professional in the field of mergers and acquisitions as vice president of development at Automatic Data Processing and as a principal at New Venture Consulting. Professor Dwyer assisted in developing an undergraduate school of management at Odessa State University in the Ukraine and a school of diplomacy at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania. She was a visiting faculty member at Odessa State University Institute of International Economics, and at the Foreign Affairs College and the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing, China. Most recently she was adjunct professor and director of planning and special projects at Seton Halls School of Diplomacy and International Relations. Professor Dwyer teaches securities regulation and European business law.

Professor Kevin W. Saunders is visiting from the University of Oklahoma, where he has taught since 1986. As a law student, Professor Saunders was articles editor of the Michigan Law Review. After graduating magna cum laude, he became law clerk to the Honorable Kenneth W. Starr at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He went on to become assistant professor of law at University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and visiting chair in constitutional law as well as acting director of the Constitutional Law Resource Center at Drake University Law School. Professor Saunders has published widely on media violence and obscenity, and has appeared on panels and radio and television programs exploring the subject. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar. Professor Saunders teaches criminal and constitutional law.

Elliot A. Spoon is a professor in residence at MSU-DCL. As a law student, Professor Spoon was on the staff of the University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform. After graduating cum laude, he joined Butzel, Keidan, Simon, Myers & Graham, where he later chaired the Corporate Department. Prior to his current appointment at MSU-DCL, Professor Spoon taught at the law college on an adjunct basis. He also chaired the Business Transactions Practice Group and was a member of the Executive Committee at Jaffe, Raitt, Heuer & Weiss. He has lectured widely on various mortgage banking and corporate topics. Professor Spoon teaches contracts, corporate finance, mortgage banking, accounting for lawyers, and securities. His latest publication is titled Federal Private Mortgage Insurance Legislation: Protection in a Regulator-Free Environment.

Glen A. Staszewski is assistant professor of law at MSU-DCL.
Professor Staszewski was a trial attorney in the Civil Division of the United States Department of Justice before joining the MSU-DCL faculty in 2001. While in law school, he was editor-in-chief of the Vanderbilt Law Review, participated in the schools Civil Legal Practice Clinic, and was elected to the Order of the Coif, a national law school honor society. After graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Fortunato P. Benavides of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. Professor Staszewski is admitted to the State Bar of Texas. He teaches civil procedure as well as legislation and the legislative process.

Professor Victor L. Streib is visiting from Pettit College of Law at Ohio Northern University, where he has been dean and professor of law since 1996. A member of the Indiana Bar, he also has taught at Indiana University, New England School of Law, University of San Diego School of Law and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law. He has published extensively on capital punishment and criminal justice, particularly as they apply to women and children. Professor Streib teaches professional responsibility and criminal procedure.

Professor Michael J. Zimmer is visiting from Seton Hall University, where he has taught since 1978. As a law student, Professor Zimmer was editor-in-chief of the Marquette Law Review. Graduating first in his class, he became law clerk to the Honorable Thomas E. Fairchild of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. He went on to join Foley & Lardner of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Professor Zimmer has held additional teaching assignments at University of South Carolina, University of Illinois, Wayne State University, and the University of International Business & Economics in Beijing, China. He has published widely on employment discrimination. Professor Zimmer teaches contracts, employment discrimination and labor law.
