Board Welcomes Jenkins and Carl

Maurice G. Jenkins


The MSU-DCL Board of Trustees recently made a number of changes New to the board is Maurice G. Jenkins, ’81, labor and employment attorney with Dickinson Wright, P.L.L.C., in Detroit. Jenkins earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Michigan State University and completed the Executive Education Program in mergers and acquisitions at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.

An active MSU-DCL alumnus, Jenkins is a former member of the MSU-DCL National Alumni Association Board of Directors as well as a member of the President’s Club. He is a faculty member for the ABA Institute on Age Discrimination Litigation, a trustee of the University Liggett School in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, and serves as the acting chairman of the City of Detroit Civil Service Commission by appointment of Mayor Dennis Archer. In addition, he is a member of the Labor and Employment sections of the State and American bars, and a member of the State Bar Committee on Judicial Qualifications.

Jenkins has published and presented on National Labor Relations Board matters, the Americans with Disabilities Act, sexual harassment, and other state and federal labor and employment law issues as well as litigation strategies.

Jean P. Carl, ’68, also has been appointed to the board. A Grand Blanc, Michigan, resident, Carl has practiced in Genesee County since 1969, both as an assistant prosecutor and as a managing attorney for the UAW-GM Legal Services Plan. Prior to attending law

school, she taught middle school English and social studies and was a high school counselor in suburban Detroit. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Western Michigan University and Eastern Michigan University, respectively, and completed graduate courses in social work at Wayne State University.

Carl is active in the Genesee County Bar Association, where she has served as a board member, as a delegate for the Women Lawyers Section and as a member of several committees, including the Bench and Bar Committee and the Personnel Committee. She was president of the association from 1992-93 and last year chaired its Law Day. She is a member of the Women Lawyers Association of Michigan and was president from 1985-86. Carl serves as a hearing panelist for the Attorney Discipline Board and a mediator for the District Court. She is a member of the MSU-DCL National Alumni Association and served as its president from 1984-85.

Carl has lectured extensively on juvenile law, has conducted training sessions for prosecutors and law enforcement personnel and has been involved in juvenile code changes. She is a member of the YWCA of Greater Flint Foundation board, the Genesee County Coordinating Council for Strong Families-Safe Children and the Governor’s Task Force on Children’s Justice.

Board member Clifton E. Haley, ’61, stepped up as the new MSU-DCL board president, and Judge Richard F. Suhrheinrich,’63, was named president emeritus. Members George N. Bashara, ’60, John F. Schaefer, ’69, and Kenneth J. Robinson retired from the board. New members Stuart J. Dunnings III and Donald W. Nugent were welcomed during the spring of 2001.
