Cylenthia LaToye Miller Jason J. Thompson
Cylenthia LaToye Miller, ’96, and Jason J. Thompson, ’92, were recognized by Michigan Lawyers Weekly as two of five “up and coming” attorneys in Michigan. Miller is with Lewis & Munday, P.C., of Detroit, and Thompson is with Charfoos & Christensen, P.C., also of Detroit. Miller also was named “Member of the Year” by the Wolverine Bar Association.


Alumni Gift


This impressive grandfather clock was donated by the Class of 2001 “as a symbol of our gratitude to those who have gone the extra mile in making our law school experience enjoyable and worthwhile.” The clock, which arrived during the summer, stands in the MSU-DCL Law Library.





John V. Tocco

John V. Tocco, ’92, started a publishing firm, Favorite Uncle Books, L.L.C., specializing in children’s books. The firm has published its first book, Elfinbright, The Tale of the Forever Present, with Tocco as author. He also started Tocco Construction Consulting, L.L.C., of Dearborn, Michigan, which specializes in arbitration and mediation of construction disputes, as well as project management and claims analysis. Tocco authored two articles published in CAM Magazine, the monthly publication of the Construction Association of Michigan: “Michigan Adopts New Court Rule for ADR” in January 2001 and “Understanding Parol Evidence” in August 2001. He is an MSU-DCL adjunct faculty member teaching construction law and an adjunct instructor in the Civil Engineering Department at Lawrence Technological University, where he teaches undergraduate and master’s level courses in project management, cost estimating and contracting, risk analysis and safety, and ethics.




David Christensen, ’72, received the MSU-DCL Distinguished Alumni Award at the college’s June 9, 2001, commencement exercises. Nominees and award recipients are selected each year by their alumni peers.

Edward D. Gold

Edward D. Gold, ’64, was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by the State Bar of Michigan Family Law Section at the Bar’s 2001 annual meeting. He is the sixth person to receive the award, given to attorneys with at least 25 years of family-law service, including teaching, writing and participating in special projects. Gold is a senior shareholder at Butzel Long in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. He is a former chairperson of the Family Law Section of the State Bar, was nominated to serve as a vice president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and has served as president of the Michigan Chapter and a board member of the national organization. Gold has been named for the past 10 years in Best Lawyers in America in family law.

1940-1949

Robert C. Macomber, Sr., ’43, was awarded the Silver Beaver by the Boy Scouts of America National Council. It is the highest honor an adult scout may receive and is given for service to the community, service to youth in scouting and service to youth outside scouting. Approximately one of every 1,000 scout volunteers is so honored.


1960-1969

James R. Stelt, ’64, served as a visiting district probate or circuit judge for 14 of Michigan’s counties.

Clarification: In the last issue, we reported the death of Donald Campbell, ’61. It was Donald A. Campbell who passed away. Professor Emeritus Donald F. Campbell, also a member of the Class of 1961, is an active alumnus residing in the Detroit area. We apologize for the confusion.


1970-1979

The Honorable Robert L. Ziolkowski, ’70, was elected chairman of the Board of Directors of Life Directions, Inc., which has provided peer mentoring and motivation in the Detroit Public Schools for more than 25 years.


Jack L. Saks

Jack L. Saks, ’74, was elected to the board of directors of On My Own of Michigan. The non-profit organization helps young adults with mild developmental disabilities to become independent, contributing members of the community.

Richard S. Victor, ’75, and John F. Mills, ’77, teamed up with fellow attorneys Scott Bassett and Rick Trost in forming “The Bare Assets,” a jazz quartet that plays for various fund raisers, bar association events and charitable functions throughout Michigan.

Chalmer W. West, ’76, retired as assistant general counsel for Wells Fargo & Company, located in Denver, Colorado.

Kathleen Goetsch, ’79, completed her term as president of the Livingston County (Michigan) Bar Association. She was appointed by the Howell City Council to a four-year term as a trustee of the Howell Carnegie District Library Board. In July 2001, she was selected as vice president of the board.


1980-1989

George M. Malis, ’81, of Detroit relocated his practice and is now of counsel to Wulfmeier & Ottenwess.

Kathryn L. Ossian, ’84, of Pleasant Ridge, Michigan, received the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award. The award is given by the Catholic Youth Organization in recognition of excellence and dedication in bringing the spirit of the Catholic faith to youth through service in Girl Scouts. Ossian is a principal in the Detroit, Michigan, office of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C.

Linda M. Garbarino, ’85, joined Willmarth, Tanoury, Ramar, Corbet, Garves & Shaw as the principal-in-charge of the firm’s appellate division.

Charles Falgie, ’86, was named director of insider trading investigations and regulatory counsel of the Philadelphia Stock Exchange.

John W. Dunham, ’87, joined Dean & Fulkerson in its Corporate and Business Law Practice Group.

1990-1999

Lauren J. Hammett, ’90, became a partner with Fischer, Franklin & Ford in Detroit, Michigan.
Marciann M. Grzadzinski, ’91, is working on Capitol Hill as a fellow with the Brookings Institute.

Thomas H. Schram, ’92, joined Ward & Smith, P.A., as a partner in the litigation practice section of the Wilmington, North Carolina, office. The firm employs approximately 65 attorneys with offices throughout eastern North Carolina.

Thomas V. Silvia, ’92, is a chair member of the Indian Law Sector of the State Bar of Michigan and has served on the Lawyer Referral Services Committee and Indian Law Committee since 1995.

Polly Putnam White, ’92, was named chair of the Executive Council of the Probate and Trust Section of the State Bar of Arizona.

Jeffrey W. Buckman, ’94, merged his practice with two other attorneys to create the firm of McDowell, Buckman & MacDonald, P.C., located in Holland, Michigan.


Ellen C. Padesky

Ellen C. Padesky, ’94, was named associate counsel for Coachmen Industries, Inc., in Elkhart, Indiana. Padesky previously was with Kitch Drutchas Wagner DeNardis & Valitutti in Detroit, Michigan.

Jennifer R. Gowens, ’95, joined the Case Western Reserve University School of Law.

David M. Gilmore, ’97, had his article titled “A Free Trade Area of the Americas: Is it Desirable?” published in the University of Miami Inter-American Law Review.


Stephen W. King

Stephen W. King, ’97, joined the Farmington Hills, Michigan, office of Fink, Zausmer & Kaufman. He specializes in commercial litigation.

Wade McCann, ’97, was promoted to deputy chief of special prosecutions for the Wayne County (Michigan) Prosecutor’s Office.

Andrew S. Muroff, ’97, sold his company, SoftQuad Software, Ltd., to the Corel Corporation.

John K. Robertson, ’97, organized the first annual Kal-Haven fall color bike tour on the Kal-Haven trail between Kalamazoo and South Haven, Michigan.

Erica M. Rabenhorst, ’98, of Brooklyn, New York, was promoted to applications consultant for LexisNexis. She was married to Artie Rabenhorst in January 2000.

Lee A. Sartori, ’98, became a shareholder of Howard & Howard in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. He concentrates his practice in general business, real estate and tax law.

Michael P. Calabrese, ’99, joined the Lansing, Michigan, office of Clark Hill, P.L.C.

P.J. Cherrin, ’99, is employed as a banking liaison at the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, Inc.

Christine M. Decke, ’99, became an associate at Connelly Sheehan & Moran in Chicago, Illinois. She represents corporate clients of the firm, which specializes in employment and labor matters.

Kwame M. Kilpatrick, ’99, minority leader of the Michigan House of Representatives, was elected mayor of Detroit.

Marie M. Mayard-Henry, ’99, completed her LLM in taxation at New York University and is working for Ice Miller in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Joseph P. Saulski, ’99, of Royal Oak, Michigan, left his position as a clerk to Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Maura Corrigan to take an associate attorney position with Young & Susser, P.C., a Southfield, Michigan, law firm specializing in complex litigation.


Andrew Starr

Andrew Starr, ’99, joined Dykema Gossett, P.L.L.C., in Detroit, Michigan, as an associate. He focuses on general corporate law matters with an emphasis on government contract procurement law.

2000-2001

Timothy P. Cremen, ’00, accepted a position as an intellectual property attorney with Sughrue Mion Zinn Macpeak & Seas, P.L.L.C., in Washington, D.C.
Timothy J. Dardas, and Angela M. Emlet, both Class of 2000 members, were married in March 2001. He works for Johnson & Wyngaarden, P.C., specializing in medical malpractice defense, and she works in the litigation and tax departments at Honigman Miller Schwartz & Cohn, L.L.P., in Lansing, Michigan.

Cameron R. Monti, ’01, was awarded an academic scholarship to the University of Washington School of Law Taxation Law Program to pursue an
LLM degree.
