Michigan State University College of Law Alumni Association Board of Directors Nomination

Thank you for your interest in the Michigan State University College of Law's Alumni Association Board of Directors ("Board"). The Board is comprised of alumni of the Law College who have been elected by current Board members to serve no more than two consecutive three-year terms.

What does the Board do? The Board is the elected governing body of the Alumni Association and is comprised of a President, President-Elect, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary, and other Board members. Dean Joan Howarth and Director of Alumni Relations Laurie Schaibly serve as ex-officio members of the Board. The Board funds and is responsible for a number of alumni events, including the annual golf outing and homecoming tailgate and football game. The Board also coordinates the Alumni Mentor Program which pairs current law students with an alumnus of the Law College. Additionally, the Board presents an annual award to a distinguished alumnus of the Law College and it is in the process of establishing a fund to award an annual scholarship to a law school student. The Board also hosts and coordinates a variety of other activities that serve the interests of both the alumni and current students.

What is expected of Board members? Board members must be dues paying members and in good standing with the Alumni Association. Currently, the Board meets once a month on the third Tuesday in August, September, October, November, January, February, March, April and May, as well as additional meetings as called for by the President. Meetings are conducted at various locations throughout the state. Board members are expected to personally attend the monthly Board meetings and actively contribute to the Board's discussion, but may attend via teleconference where circumstances warrant. Board members are expected to actively serve on one or more of the following Alumni Association committees: Alumni Student Liaison Committee, Student Mentor Program Committee, Distinguished Alumni Award Committee, Events and Activities Committee, Membership Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Finance Committee, Executive Board Committee, Scholarship Committee, or the Alumni Board Nominating Committee. Board members are expected to attend each monthly Board meeting as well as Alumni Association and Law College events when possible. Additionally, Board members are expected to abide by the Board's by-laws.
