Learn Lawyering in Skills Courses

Becoming a lawyer goes beyond accumulating theoretical knowledge. While legal analysis is critical, the job doesn’t end there. From drafting contracts to working one-on-one with clients to mediating disputes, the daily life of a lawyer will require you to put legal knowledge into practice.

That’s where skills courses come in.

MSU Law offers dozens of courses that require students to complete hands-on lawyering assignments. Many of our skills courses are taught by top-notch practitioners – mediators, attorneys, and judges. They bring their up-to-the-minute real-world knowledge into the classroom, and provide the kind of guidance that will help you to hit the ground running on your first day of legal practice.

Skills courses are great for hands-on learners, too. You’ll receive in-depth faculty feedback to improve the quality of your work. The classroom environment is active and engaged, and student participation is required.

In addition to individual skills courses, MSU Law offers structured programs that focus on building practice skills.  No matter how you’re planning to use your law degree, you’ll have opportunities to prepare for practice in your area of interest.
