“Michigan State College of Law did a wonderful job of encouraging students to fill their schedules with elective classes in core areas of law with which every lawyer should be conversant.”

Colleen Gomos is a member of the Corporate Practice Group in the Chicago office of Seyfarth Shaw LLP. “I have experience representing middle-market companies in mergers and acquisitions, and representing lenders and borrowers in connection with secured lending, as well as representing investors and borrowers in connection with private securities offerings and venture capital financing,” she said. “I also assist companies across various industries with general corporate needs.”

As a corporate lawyer, Colleen represents some clients from their inception to multiple transactions. She serves as more than just an occasional advisor—she’s a partner involved in the life of the businesses. “I enjoy having the opportunity to draw upon my legal education to help clients meet their business objectives of long-term growth and success,” Colleen said.

Colleen credits her role on the editorial board of the Michigan State Law Review as instrumental in preparing her for the rigors and responsibilities of private practice. “While the work itself is not necessarily applicable, the experience taught me important lessons about organization, prioritization, and working effectively with a team,” she said. “As for coursework, Secured Transactions was most helpful since a great deal of my work today touches on some aspect of secured financing.”

She is also appreciative of the practical experience she gained at the Michigan Court of Appeals through the Law College's externship program. “I secured a clerkship with a U.S. bankruptcy court judge following graduation, and I believe my ability to cite prior work for a member of the judiciary provided a useful advantage in what is an extremely competitive hiring process,” she said.
